VICTORIA UNIVERSITY WELLINGTON, RUTHERFORD HOUSE

The abstract custom carpet tile patterns at Rutherford House are reminiscent of pacific sails, a response to the historic context sea edge ‘trading post’ position in the city and in relation to water’s edge identity, use and activity.
The patterns are based on 'whāriki' (finely woven floor mats) which are symbols of community, kinship, hospitality and warmth.
